jesterisdead
I have a large green monti cap. It has large brown "dead areas" and need to know if this is normal or if my lights are burning it? Its growing and is vibrant green but there are four now of these brown spots. My other three monti caps seem fine but they are under lights on other parts of the tank and reason I'm wanting the par meter.
Guest Willy
Why is there a link to a hard hat helmet sticker?
jesterisdead
Its apparently our webhost scanning and sending spam links. The brownspot comes up an amazon site selling stickers...
Recliner
Mine developed some deadpan spots in 2-3 days. Up to then it was very healthy in the same spot near the back of my tank. I moved mine to the center of my tank. In 3 days it bounced back 100%, so in my case I guess it just needed more light all of a sudden. I'm WAY closer to a SPS newbie then a pro though
chopper320
Is there a chance that detritus is settling in those spots? I have to shoot my larger monti cap with a turkey baster every couple of days because detritus settles and if I leave it there too long that spot will brown out. jesterisdead
I have a small jaboe wp25 blowing across it in wave mode mode and the crabs seem to be at the spots as well eating at it. Are they cleaning it or causing it?
Luke33
I doubt its to much light as i was hitting my large monti cap with over 1300 par. I would keep an eye on the other monti's in your tank, could be nudi's. But just keep your parameters consistent and it should recoup. jesterisdead
Nudi? You mean those little site things that are supposed to be aptasia eaters? Ill keep an eye out. I would blame it on the calcium/alk spike I caused but the water tested high for calcium only and everything else is spot on.
Luke33
If your alk jumped around then yes that could have caused it. Yes, monti eating nudi's, they are a pest that eat monti's. Generally you won't really know they are there until all your monti's are affected. But they cause patches like your seeing. I would say if all your monti's were showing this issue i'd be concerned, but if its isolated not so much, but i would bust out a flashlight at night to check on it. jesterisdead
The green purple rims I got from you are fading so is it possible its my gfo?
Luke33
How much gfo did you add at once?
jesterisdead
I started with half a cup and ran it for about 3 weeks then went to a cup and I run it for about 3 weeks but I've noticed that since I've been running this gfo it to one side with the Browning and other issues I'm having with my SPS so is it possible I'm stripping too much stuff out? And just shut it off just run carbon and or bio pellets and carbon
Luke33
Well, sure its possible. Why did you start running it in the first place?
jesterisdead
Trying to knock down phospates
Luke33
What were they before the gfo and how fast did they come down?
jesterisdead
I don't recall the exact number I just know that it was in the high to medium range according to the charts. I did not aggressively test but I did after the first 3 weeks and they were cut in half so for some reason I keep thinking they're like 08 or something like that
Luke33
If that's all that has changed in your tank it very well could be the fact you pulled down your phosphates. I've had great growth and colors with phosphates over .1 on sps. I would never try to pull my po4 below .05. Gfo is one of those hit or miss media's. If you don't need it don't mess with it. jesterisdead
I turned it off and just running carbon
Luke33
I would feed heavier than normal
Guest Willy
Carbon can strip your water just as much as gfo
Luke33
I will respectfully disagree willy, carbon will clean your tank of harmful chemicals but will not strip your water like gfo. Two very different animals
pwoller
Agree with Luke and Willy. Cut out the carbon and gfo and feed more.
Luke33
And get rid of that undersized skimmer
jesterisdead
I was afraid you're going to say that the carbon was possible as well. I used it for water clarity got a lot of debris that's constantly running around a lot of that is due to the diamond goby
jesterisdead
If I can get this 40 breeder sump built and installed this weekend I'll be using filter socks
