jesterisdead
I'm bouncing back and forth now over the 8' length or the tall. I'm leaning toward the tall as it gives me height to scape with and do a rock wall type of setup but the extra 2' in length would be nice as well. Scalare102079
the deeper the tank, the more difficult to get your PAR up on the substrate. wider is better in my book.
Scalare102079
You can also save some money by going with dry base rock rather than all live rock. just buy a couple of choice pieces of live to seed your base.

Reefhappy
I would consider paying a little extra for the primecuts from Marco rocks, just for ease of scaping.. http://www.marcorocks.com/MarcoRocksPrimecut.aspx Even if not the prime cuts for the quantity you would need you can get 100lbs for $215 http://www.marcorocks.com/100poundskeylargorockfreeshippinginthecontinentalus.aspx
Dustin1300
+1 to using dry rock so you can work out a good aquascape. It'll give you time to get it all squared away before adding water without any rush. Check out post 1698 and 1699 on aquascaping on my build thread on RC: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums//showthread.php?t=2075733&page=68 In regards to tank size don't forget about depth too. I love the 96"X48" but like the Oregon reef I earlier posted, nothing replaces that depth which gives major character. As far as height, I think 30" is the deepest I'd go on a tank. I'll have no problems gaining the PAR needed with the Atlantiks at 30" based on PAR testing a single fixture and when you overlap the light, the PAR doubles or triples depending on how much they are overlapping.
