JonnyRingo Posted December 21, 2014 Report Share Posted December 21, 2014 So the IM stand for the fusion 40 is pretty horrible, I decided to build a DIY stand based on the DIY stand thread on ReefCentral.com. After I got everything assembled I noticed that I cut my screw strips the same as the height of the tank. Does anyone know if this will be an issue? AndrewG Posted December 23, 2014 Report Share Posted December 23, 2014 The height of the screw strips is not an issue as long as they don't stick up beyond the outer perimeter and touch the tank. If the tank has an outer rim on the bottom it wouldn't touch anyway. The cross brace at the bottom strengthens the stand but will reduce your sump/skimmer available height by 3.5" if you plan on having a sump. This design is stronger than the cheesy particleboard stands and skinning will strengthen even more. I bought a used tank with one of those particleboard stands that got wet and had the edges swell up on the bottom. Not a structural issue but didn't look nice. Some sanding, bondo, and paint fixed it but a hassle. The solid wood construction is less susceptible to water damage. Your stand looks nice. JonnyRingo Posted December 30, 2014 Author Report Share Posted December 30, 2014 Stand part deux.... I went and bought new wood and assembled a new stand. I did this one with pocket screws instead of the screw strips and it is what I should have done the first time, this stand is much stronger.
