  1. Welcome to the seriously addictive watery world of reefs. For a spec V I'd look I to a PAR38 LED or see if there's anything reef Brite makes that may work. Not familiar with the specific dimensions but I know it's a small rectangle.

Advice? Be patient and don't do anything in a hurry on a 5g. Keep the water topped off at all times and stock very lightly and keep with weekly water changes.

Post up some pics, dimensions and your current plans as far as stocking goes. Fortunately 5g means you can go too crazy spending wise unless you grow an affinity for high end SPS or zoas.

  2. I think that one is really old and not made any longer. They pop up from time to time on RC.

Could you just use a wireless extender? Most have ether net ports built in anymore. That or a spare netgear router that has the ability to be configured as a repeater. That's what I plan to do for my frag tank. I'm about to switch out my router for a new AC MU-MIMO one and send my old dual band one to the living room as a repeater.

  3. How can I see the TOTQ up close? Can't make it bigger.

Also, we signed up as members at the swap. How do we designate it on here?

    Thank you.

It depends on the source image. Sometimes pictures posted from tapatalk don't open in a larger view when you click on them.

See if you have the option to right click and open image in a new tab. If on a phone tablet it'll just say open image. It should open a new browser window with just the photo and you should be able to zoom to some extent.

Oh and welcome to the club! Did you have the opportunity to make it to our April meet this past Saturday?

  4. The gfci could be the halide. They are notorious for tripping. Not just because of the start up load but also internal wiring. Insulation on the interior wires when exposed to salt creep and whatnot can let enough current leak that they'll trip. Only real way to test would be to take the MH off the gfci. Then you'll know what's causing it. The same scenario could easily occur in the t5 fixture as well.

  5. With the close call that we just had for April's meet we definitely still need someone for November and I'd like to get at least 1, if not 2 more potential back up hosts as well.

Can anyone step up for these? I can be a 2nd string backup, though I'd need at the very least 2 weeks notice to make it work on my end with my work schedule and that has rarely been the case in the past.

As always if you need assistance to prepare for a meeting I can help out and if necessary i'm sure we can round up one or two other volunteers to get things ready for you. All you have to do is ask!

  6. Sorry for the short notice everyone but thanks to PatO we have a place to be this Saturday.

We will be meeting at Pat's place at the customary 4pm on the SW side of Indy @ 5438 Dollar Run Drive Indianapolis in 46221

You'll get to see his 93 gallon barebottom Rimless cube. Custom stand, custom made glass external overflow, calcium reactor, a "controller that doesn't control much" , that sounds an awful lot like my underutilized Apex's. Lol.

As always there will be a great raffle along with snacks, and knowledge to be passed along and good times for everyone.

Please RSVP here so Pat can plan accordingly.

If you want to take a look at the build thread here you go!

  7. Just load everything into buckets and fill with water, move efficiently and keep temp as stable as you can and you'll be fine. Don't rush....things get dropped, forgotten, damaged, etc. Then your day gets really bad.

I've moved/upgraded probably a dozen tanks over the last several years with little issue. The one major problem I had was an anemone that got sucked into a power head and nuked almost everything. I had things staged in a 44g brute for a few days though. Had it been a simple remove and replace type upgrade all would have been fine.

  8. INDMAS, we need to switch our venue for the April Meeting. Who wants to show off all their hard work and get some recognition in the process? I know I've already asked a lot of you at the swap and via PM in the meantime, feel free to ignore this unless you've changed your mind. I know there is at least a dozen or so new members out there that came in the door at the swap that sounded like they had some pretty nice systems.

Location isn't terribly important, we would like to keep it in the greater Indy area if possible but given the change I'm sure we can work with anything. I've hosted the last 2 April Meets and saw between 15 and 20 attendees both years to give you an idea of a typical crowd. There's always the chance you're way cooler than me and could have a larger turnout too.

So, who's wants this opportunity? Please shoot me a PM with details (location, basic tank info, etc) asap. If you volunteer for this I need a FIRM commitment as there would likely be little time to change venue again before the meet. If necessary I will come help you with anything you need to get ready for the meet, so long as you're flexible on time. My work schedule has me working basically all weekends until near the end of May.

We typically go for the 2nd Saturday of the month so we'd be looking at April 9th, 4pm.

A HUGE Thanks in Advance for anyone willing to step up and help out your favorite club!

  9. Perhaps reach out to Erin, Jokergirl on here. She has a mantis, has for awhile now and knows quite a bit and might know a trick or two.

Personally I have no experience with them. Your plan sounds reasonable, though potentially time intense. That's probably still better than costly dead fish and coral in the future however.

As far as the directed flow it probably depends on how stubborn the particular creature is being. I've seen crabs on on for dear life, to the point I caved under my emotions and just stabbed it with a pickle fork for removal. Lol.

Is this Tampa Bay saltwater rock? If so I have it in my 100g and at least as far as mine goes there are no deep recesses in it for things to hide like youd find with other types of rock so that's a plus on your end.

  10. I'm not sure that will work with using just float switches. If you have a float switch near the bottom of the container so it doesn't kick on until near empty as soon as it fills to that level it's done.

I've never tried to do this with a reservoir but seems like it may be more complicated than a float switch. I'm thinking some sort of electronic solenoid/vavle on the supply line to the ro that's managed by an apex with a breakout box connected to a pair of floats, a high and low. Only fill when both floats are both triggered and only shutoff when the upper one closes.

  11. I've had water in a brute can with a lid on it for a month with no issues. The key is circulation and environment. If it's in a dusty 100 degree garage in the summer with no water movement it could get funky but other than that I wouldn't be worried.

  12. The furthest north that I'm aware of are in Kokomo, Peru, Lafayette, and Muncie area.

Welcome to the club. If there's a way we can help I'm sure someone will step up. Personally I am likely unavailable if it's needed to be moved soon. I have only one day off this week and have quite a bit to accomplish. Wouldn't be free again until March 30th.

  13.

Anything that has been aerosolized can be absorbed by the water and therefore end up in your tank. Many common household chemicals are pretty toxic and the relatively small amount of water in our aquariums makes it even more so.

We try to stick to not toxic stuff in our house and do a lot of our cleaning with soap and water or vinegar and water. It's pretty rare when something is sprayed in our house, except in the bathroom.

I can only imagine. I still remember the RV... lol
