  1. +1 here. It took me about a year to get my levels in check and steady. I was the same as you in that I wanted that beautiful purple stuff on my rocks. I had about 30lbs of dry base and 10 or so live to start. As soon as my parameters were in check the purple stuff went nuts! Rock, glass, anything plastic, even snail shells. Get a good scraper for your glass.
  2. Dear god don't throw it out! If you don't want it there are plenty of people who will take it(me for one! lol). +1 on both Dustin and Luke for suggesting just soaking it in rodi(I use salt) for a few months, do water changes and check for phos and nitrate. Let it get clean and put it in your tank.
  3. I get them every so often, they'll pop up on the glass for awhile then disappear again. Not sure if they truly are hydroids or not but they've never hurt anything that I know of. I had them all the time in my 150 predator but never paid any attention to them.
  4. What type of effects have you seen from having the red and green added into the mix? Where do you live on the NW side? I work near the pyramids and would like to see your setup. Always worth a short drive to see a fellow reefer's inginuity.
  5. I've definitely had both mithrax crabs and blue legged hermits, along with pep shrimp eat things in my tanks. I don't trust any crab, no matter how "safe" they're labeled. I agree with the red light procedure. And strangely, I agree with noodlenugs on the hunting party. Count me in for a beer and a redlight, wait that sounds way to much like my summer in Amsterdam...
  6. Turns out I won't make this one. My niece has her first horseback barrel race and I promised I'd be there. Can't disappoint that beautiful little girl! Sorry Chris, no chicken scratches this meeting...
  7. I plan on being there for this one. I want to do an integrated LED into my current hood. Chris, I'll take notes for you. I have the handwriting of a doctor(but not the paycheck...)
  8. Only if it's good beer. And you bring enough to share with your closest of (well, maybe never met before but if you have beer) friends.
  9. Well, I didn't sleep last night hoping to wake up to presents under the tree(pine trees will thrive in saltwater right?). But the excitement doesn't stop because of that! See you all soon. I'll be the one wearing clothes, probably pants of sorts and a shirt with sleeves on it.
  10. Hi, my name's Ryan. I'm an addict...to reefing!!!
  11. Andy, did I just meet you today in the meeting? If so I was going to talk to you before I left but you guys had gone to lunch for someone's last day(I think?). I talked with Theresa about my tank and she had a few ideas that I didn't think of. I wanted to talk with you about some of the coral you have in the holding tanks, too. I will be there again next Sunday 7:30-12. I'll look for you when we both have a free minute or two.
  12. Is it just me or is anyone else out there thinking......."Is it swap day yet?!" I had a pretty bad Easter weekend because when I got home from family functions my tank had crashed(don't know what went wrong, even had the head lab tech from the zoo's water quality lab come and check it out for me). Kept a lot from completely dying off but lost a lot of color that is starting to come back a little. Favorite thing I lost was my alien eye chalice so I'll have my eyes open for another one or maybe something else really close to it at the swap.
  13. First off let me just say, I had crabs once and as anyone one will tell you, they itch like crazy. I mean just aren't safe... But seriously, I had bad luck with an emerald who liked my softies even more than my bubble algae. I like the foxface idea though. I had a gold spot rabbitfish when I had my 150gal and absoulutely loved him. He made short work of both green and red bubbles and was an amazingly cool fish to watch. The sting part is a concern but as long as you don't go drunk cleaning you should be fine. Like it's been said, it'll hurt but won't kill you. And who hasn't gone through a little pain in this hobby anyway, right?
  14. I was feeding mine a linkia every 2 weeks. I actually ended up taking them back to the store for store credit because my water quality started going down when they would drag the linkia under a rock where I couldn't get to it. But I only have a 34gal tank so a bigger tank might not be affected as easily.
  15. I have been to both Shedds and Newport. Loved them both! Buuuut, Shedds was nicer. Plus, the research on rehabilitation and release programs is awesome up there! If anyone has been to Georgia Aquarium please let us know how awesome it is!!
  16. PatO - Here's the best I can do for now. I'll try and get some more pics of the actual equipment as soon as I can though.
  17. I've had my tank(34gal Red Sea Max) up and running for a year and a half. I'm needing to get new bulbs since I haven't replaced them since the beginning. I was online shopping and they are labeled as "T5 power compact lights". Are they T5's, PC's, or a combination of both if there is such a thing?
  18. Ok guys and gals, I've been in the hobby for a few years and I've recently dumbfounded myself(again). I should know this but don't and need some help on understanding. Can someone please tell me the difference between Power Compact lights and T5's? Or at least give me a link to find out as much info on these lights as I can get. Pu....pu..pleeeeeaaassseee!
  19. I'll definitely help out. Just let me know what you need and when you need me there.
  20. Hey I was at ChrisP's place for the meeting and talked with you a little about your tank. If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to drop by sometime check it out. I'm always interested in seeing tanks with no skimmers and what you do to keep nutrient overload down.

  21. I'd just like to say thank you to people like Ken. I'm happy to live in a world where someone like him and his volunteers realize that there is an absolute need for coral reefs in the wild. Go Ken!
  22. A lettuce sea slug!! I love those guys. I have two in my tank that rode in on some rock. They can get to a decent size but they are a really cool algae eater.
  23. I'm liking where this whole "community" idea is going. I have given(and been given to) many frags for absolutely nothing but a thanks and a promise to keep in mind down the road or maybe just to pay it forward to the next guy. I am pretty handy with construction or woodworking and would be willing to help out anyone. All you have to do is ask and give me time to make some time for you. I would definitely take a frag or help in the aquarium area for trade.
