  1. I work on Saturdays but if I can get an advance on when I should be able to get the day off.
  2. I'd be in for a Sunday trip. Be willing to provide refreshments for the non-drivers of the group also.
  3. Looks really good! Love the McCoskers.
  4. I actually used something like what you're saying except it was a small-ish acrylic box with holes drilled for flow that could hang in the back corner of the 150 I had in Florida. I noticed that the fish would get a little more stressed being in the box rather than just letting them free in the main display to observe the pecking order on their own. That said, this is just my experience of a short amount of time(about six months) and my own observation.
  5. I'm definitely in for 2. I could go more if we need.
  6. I just got back in town after running the Tough Mudder in northern Illinois and it was AWESOME!!! I have a small group planning to travel to Wisconsin to run another one in September(weekend of the 7th and 8th) and was wanting to let you all know that you are welcome to join us and we'd love to have you.
  7. I'm def in for a group buy on this one. I love the salinity salt and just having set up my 75 I'd love to get some more at a good price. Keep us Posted Dustin!
  8. +1 on this, but it's really difficult to tell from the pics. Have you touched it? Is it hard or soft? Does it attempt to get away from you? I definitely think you should touch it or at least poke it with a stick. But seriously, see if it moves when you get close to it.
  9. I'll get some ordered today and pick it up before I head to work. Thanks for the input!
  10. I'll be running a RIo+ 2100 return(~425-450 gal/hr@3 1/2ft head) as my return. I have 2-Tunze nanostream 6055(rated 250-1450 gal/hr) for circulation so I am definitely leaning towards a coarser size sandbed. Invert, I've noticed from your posts that you do a lot of research and lean to the side of natural ecosystem, which I really like and respect. Is there a reason you went with a finer substrate on bottom and coarse on top? Is there a filtration(ie. more biologically sound bacterial growth) in the fine reef mix as compared to the coarser?
  11. I'm upgrading from a 34gal RedSea Max all in one to a 75gal/40gal sump setup(yay for that!). I'm trying to decide what type of substrate to go with. Fish livestock plans are a starry blenny, whitecheek tang or kole tang, and a nem and two clowns(haven't decided on type yet). I'm going with a mixed reef, scoly at the center with various sps up high and lps towards the middle. I'll have some zoa's and maybe a leather or two also. What type of substrate do you guys recommend? Yes, I'm looking for opinions and will take all suggestions as such, so be brutal in your "why's"...Ha!
  12. +1 on this. I had a horrible problem with them in my 34gal. Thought they were so cute when I first noticed them, then they I noticed my zoa colonies starting to get smaller and the asterina population start growing like crazy. I "rented" a harlequin pair and in a couple weeks I had none. A beautiful thing.
  13. I'll be starting my 5th tank this coming summer, 4 when I lived in Florida and one here in Indy. Three of the tanks I had in FL(a 150gal, a 75gal, and a 44gal) did not have any noticeable cycle. I had a pico(8gal) that spiked like crazy, but the rest, especially the 150, had nothing. I had 10lbs live rock and appx 150lbs of dry, and added 10pcs shrimp after 2 weeks. It never showed ammonia, nitrites, or nitrates. I waited over 6 weeks after adding the shrimp and decided it was long enough. I added a couple fish and some softies and had no problems. I guess my point to the story is not every tank has to have a cycle. It's a wonderful staple to run off but nature finds a way, right?
  14. I plan on being there, but it will depend on work. Will have a +1 if I can make it.
  15. Thank you Hooked! I'll check out the RC thread.
  16. I'm wondering if anyone on here has any personal experience with frogfish or anglers. Looking for info on their behavior, eating habits, if they can be weened from live to prepared foods, ect. I have read a lot but would really like input from someone who has personal experience. Thanks guys and gals!!
  17. +1 on Reef Cleaners and Tampa bay. I used Reef Cleaners for my tank now and he always sends you extra even at amazing prices already. I can't say enough good things about Tampa Bay either though. Used them in when I lived in FL and was surprisingly satisfied. He knows his CUC's for sure. You probably know this but stay away from sand sifting stars, they'll eat everything in your sand bed then die of starvation. Also, I'll never put another crab of any kind into my display or anywhere with coral or other inverts. To many good crabs gone bad.
  18. Thought some of you might like this short article if for nothing else than the picture. http://reefbuilders.com/2012/06/25/echinophylia-cray-cray-chalice/#ixzz1yp2QTla4
  19. The Miami Seaquarium has one of these! It's an awesome little thing. When I was there they were holding a deep sea bioluminescent angler in it. That was a few years ago but still really cool to see.
  20. Dustin, I have done residential contruction for quite some time now(since high school, I'm 33 now). I would be happy to take a look at your blue prints for you and do a physical examination of your home. Free of charge for a fellow reefer of course. It looks at though you would be safe to remove the two walls from your rendering that you posted but to be sure you need to make sure the joists are extended to walls of the basement and solid over the steel support beams. If those two things are in line you need to look at what is above this area also. If you are supporting a lot of weight on the floor above(appliances and such), you would need to factor that in as well. Any questions feel free to ask. Ryan
  21. I use a less expensive API test. I have found that as long as you test about the same time of day every day you test has done best for me. It took me awhile to get used to having to keep things as constant as I can since my schedule is usually so hectic. I've actually started to believe my aquarium is treatment for ADHD. Lol
  22. +1 on Grainger. You can find find anything there. If they don't have it in stock just take the brass piece in with you and have them order it in plastic.
  23. Thanks for posting this Jeremy. I've heard rumors about these in the past and am now pretty stoked to get to one for myself. Hopefully rumor holds tru on this one!
