  1. On that note Ken - if you do your research you should contact Christine Williams (Reef Threads). I believe she has given presentations, at MACNA last year maybe specifically, on the bad stuff we can get from our tanks.
  2. Are they doing a culture to ID the bacteria and then using that to do a antibiotic sensitivity study? When we had our first child I was pretty worried about what "stuff" they could get from the tank. On my research for myco I thought it was a slow growing bacteria. Typically doesn't show for up to months and then presents as sores or lumps that may go away before coming back worse. I am sure there are exceptions but I wonder if this is a staph or even a vibrio that Ken mentioned earlier. Whatever it is good luck. Thoughts are with you as you recover.
  3. Get to a Dr ASAP!!! If the streaking is red going up your arm especially following the veins that is BAD! If you cannot get to the Dr go to an ER.
  4. A heater exchanger would be a good add to reduce humidity without losing heat. Especially if you are using LED's.
  5. Can you post a picture of it? When mine went out i was able to take it apart from inside the house. It was probably 8 years old and basically had a backbox that was mounted to the ceiling joist and then a housing that the fan, motor, etc was mounted inside that. A couple thumb screws and that came out. Unplugged the pigtail and took the inner part to Lowes. Had to buy a whole new "fan" but just put the new interior box with the all the good stuff back in the old backbox and was done.
  6. I have always thought the Cobalts were about bulletproof. I have none personally though. I have personally used and been extremely happy with Via Aqua titanium heaters.
  7. Clowns basically go to sleep at night. If you have a red light you can use they cannot see that spectrum and you should be able to net him very easy. If not just turn on a dim light quickly and have the net in the water ready to go and you should be able to get him much easier. You will have a minute or two only though while he (actually likely a she if it's the lone clown) is still a bit groggy. I also saw an ad for red nets to help prevent them frim being able to see the net. Good luck!
  8. Do a planted tank with some freshwater fancy shrimp. If you haven't seen info on all the varieties available it's quite impressive. I have thought of doing a minimalist planted jar of like a gallon with some for my desk at work.
  9. I got them to spawn yes but lost both to my killer crab during molts I think (a couple weeks apart). I am going to have to have a species only tank for a red leg hermit! To avoid having to repost all the vids and pics here is a link to my journal for them. Made it to like 22-23 days. http://www.mbisite.org/Forums/tm.aspx?m=94593
  10. Ha! I am hardly a wizard but I do enjoy it. Shortly after I got these I saw that Premium now has their captive system up and has them. Just my luck but hey, just glad I have a pair.
  11. Thought I would show off my new breeding project - Elacatinus evelynae. I was finally able to source a pair from an MBI friend. The female is nice and plump already so hoping they might spawn any day now. These are a really cool and good looking little goby. I wanted a project that was doable but a little different than the norm. Here are some pics, I will update the thread with my breeding results.
  12. I am trying to get cleared to make the Old School Swap. Sounds like an awesome setup!
  13. Nice addition. I really like all those leathers too!
  14. Sorry to hear of the bad news for everyone. Just a note, and perhaps I misread, but at least fish wise I wouldn't worry at all about a heater. My only concerns would be air stones which provide some circulation and the oxygen that is needed and keeping filter media wet. I have one air pump that is battery powered on like a D battery and actually puts out a fair amount of air as long as the airline is kept fairly short. I am sure Premium and Modern have some.
  15. I never needed to press for a high percentage of survival for each batch of eggs as there were many more eggs (1000+ for the Darwins) than what I needed. I usually liked to get 25-100 per batch. The first night was typically the big die off and then survival after that was a pretty high percentage (95%+). Had I been more cautious and tedious in my egg transfer and aeration prior to hatching the batches could have been much larger.
  16. Not a pic but a video of my favorite pair of fish ever doing my favorite thing for fish to do! And my second favorite.
  17. Ideally you would plumb your skimmer off of your drain line or an area of drain line water so that you are running the dirtiest water through your skimmer. It will also make the things plumbed off your return line more efficient. Just make sure to calculate and allow for all the taps off your return line so that you will still have adequate return flow into your tank itself.
  18. Reefhappy - you may very well be correct on that. I was thinking though that it's all part of trade. We give you stuff you run banners and ads or forum categories (sponsors) for us. Or we give you stuff for letting us sell at your swap because you have a large attendance. Fiji - I do not believe the intent is to discourage anyone. It had traditionally been the extra motivation people need to pony up the paid membership. If that is taken away there is fear the paid memberships will drop. If they drop enough there isn't even money to pay the web hosting and support fees not to mention the extras and the forum as well as all the accumulated data and knowledge simply disappears.
  19. So after thinking about it more there is no real reason even worry about it. Someone has already started a INDMAS buy/sell page. Even if they are made to change the name they will still call it whatever and people will use it. So what it really comes down to is either people believe in supporting INDMAS.org and will pay to do so or they won't. If enough people don't then the traffic to the site and revenue generation will drop leading to meetings will no longer have prizes and the frag swap will cease to have at least raffle prizes therby lowering attendance and starting a chain reaction until the swap ceases to exist and goes back to club members swapping frags for free like it used to be. Growth is a double edge sword and it comes with pains. People fairly do not appreciate or understand what it took to build the "extra" non forum stuff to what it is and what it takes to make all that happen.
  20. To me it seems no reason to have both options. Either make fb a splash page basically to divert traffic to the website and/or make it a "Paid members only" extension for a more social aspect. To me Facebook is strictly for socialization - the off topic or maybe very general stuff like "look what I got". The problem I see with it is it provides no usable archive of information because it's not searchable (correct me if I am wrong please). I see no benefit the club itself gets from fb except maybe a referral to the website if you will, which could be easily maintained. All advertisements benefit fb and are uncontrolled by the club. I might be wrong again but a key benefit is having control of the traffic and using it to generate club support dollars, right?
  21. Hey!! I thought you were driving back from Florida? That's just not fair!
  22. My preference was always a bagged frag in roughly 20 ounces of water minimum. That is problematic though for those who are selling several frags as it adds up to a lot of water needed. My concerns about the tiny bags or cups are 1. Temperature swings very quickly and easily. With the swap being in March this year it could be chilly out. 2. Water quality in such a small volume. Depends on how clean the frag plug is and how much mucus the frag is producing due to coral type or stress. As for bags, I have always been leery of ziplocks but they are a lot better than they used to be, especially the main brands. I always just went to my LFS and asked for bags and the small rubber bands. Usually cost me $3/4 to have enough for the swap. With that being said though I have had success with the frags I got in small bags and cups but I made sure to put them in the cooler at the swap (room will be warm) and not opening it until I get home to maintain temps. I also get them out and into a larger volume as quickly as I can once I get home too.
  23. I always thought a refractometer calibration station would be cool too. Especially watching out for people who are crazy and try to use non-saltwater refractometers!
  24. CoralRx has their one shot single dip product. Maybe see if a vendor or sponsor would sponsor the "Dip Education Station" area and offer a special price on them ($2.99 normally). Maybe getting people to dip once and letting them see the advantages would motivate more to do it on all purchases and they would then buy a bigger bottle from the "Dip Education Station" sponsor.
