  2. You do not want to miss this meeting. I think it's going to be epic and a great start to 2018!
  3. Credit for my submission is Atomic081. I just found a line drawing and got it converted around to fit the white on black one color design.
  4. You don't want to miss this demo, it will be great stuff!!! There will be some limited opportunity to get your own frags cut on the saw if you have something like a favia or that is difficult to frag with more traditional methods. Bag it up and bring it in, along with some extra clean water for it to be placed in after fragging.
  5. Seems to me maybe the leg of a brittle star. If not just some kind of worm. I would say good stuff and would have no worry if I saw in my reef.
  6. Good work. DIY is a big part of the fun!
  7. Just noticed The Reef has the Joyce Wilkerson book in their warehouse sale for $5. Great beginner reference!
  8. 2 slots are still open! We especially need to fill our Feb meeting as it will be upon us before we know it. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
  9. We hope you all are having a great and happy holiday season but with that being said its time to start thinking 2018!! That's right, our January 2018 Indmas meeting is within sight! In January's meeting Mike will be hosting us and we will have the opportunity to view his multiple tanks including a 80g shallow and a 240g display among other possibilities. You can also hear Mike's ideas and plans on potentially upgrading to an even larger tank. In preparation for our upcoming frag swap, the education topic will be how to frag various coral types and prepare them for the swap! We will be providing the supplies to saw (using Indmas's own Gryphon Aquasaw), chop, slice, and dip corals. There will be a colony provided for an Aquasaw demo with a drawing for pieces to take home. When: January 13th 4:00-6:00 PM Where: Tank Novice/Mike's 11809 Langham Crescent Ct Fishers IN 46037 Education: How to frag safely! Please RSVP so we can plan accordingly for attendance. Raffle Items - $50 Central Indy Aquatics Gift Card CoralRX PA Basic 4 piece Fragging Kit Frag discs, frag plugs PA Thick Coral gel 2 oz. Demo coral colony pieces
  10. I forget who might have some rotifers, if they do I am sure they will chime in. Mentioning phyto you definitely can raise clowns on live phyto, the pastes like RGComplete is a mix to give all the correct fatty acids and nutritional profile to the rotifers that the larvae will need so it's just more efficient to use the paste as it's zero work compared to a fair amount of work and a dedicated system to grow phyto. RGC also contains chlor-am-x to manage the ammonia in the rotifer culture and in the larval tub when used as "greenwater".
  11. The mbisite.org is a great resource for breeding. Joyce Wilkerson has a book back in print that is an excellent resource as well. You can buy an e-version pretty cheap. Feel free to ask away any questions too. I have raised quite a few clowns, among others.
  12. Congrats!! It's a very exiting time. Ian is right, get everything set up and prepared and try for a future batch. With that being said, setting up doesn't take very long. Order rotifers and RGComplete from Reed Mariculture. A 5 gallon bucket will work but to make it very easy you can order their Complete Culture System (CSS) Kit. You can use a 10g tank but even as small as 5g will work for a rearing vessel. Commonly used are the black round tubs I know you can buy at Menards and they give the flexibility to start at a lower water volume and increase it as they grow. An air stone and a heater and you are set. You can add a sponge filter at roughly day 10 when you have them on prepared food.
  13. Updated the list. Thanks everyone for volunteering. We still need people for Feb and May as well as a couple backups for emergencies. Don't be shy, its a great group of people and will be a fun time!
  14. A lot of it is the economics of the cost to produce the captive bred fish. In a lot of instances it's just not possible to sell for a price competitive to wild caught. Another important thing to consider is if a captive fish is 2-3 times the cost of wild but you go through 2 or 3 wild fish to get one surviving then it is really breaking even without all the extra work and loss of life. In the instance of these angels my understanding is that wild caughts come in very rarely and when they do can be difficult to get to eat and/or stop eating suddenly and perish. Don't know when DFS last sold any of those but the price might be a bit outdated as well if they rarely come into the US.
  15. Thanks Amanda! I am now back in town and online and will keep the top updated. Thanks to all that have volunteered so far. If anyone is on the fence and unsure please feel free to ask any questions you may have.
  16. Hi all! It's that time of year again, we need to plan out our 2018 meeting schedule and need host volunteers. I have laid out a schedule below, please feel free to post in the thread or PM me if there is a month you can host. We will also need two floating backups in case an emergency replacement is needed. So, if you have a tank you want to show off, a tank you would like to have some eyes on to provide advice, or anything in between we would appreciate your help! Janunary- tanknovice February - March - Frag Swap (no meeting) April - PetesFolly May - June (Summer Social) - rhwimmers July - Club Fieldtrip August - Reefaddict12 and CoralBeauty28 September (Retro Frag Swap)- Budman October - SilentNight1793 November - Gonzo620 December (Holiday Party) TYRYFIN
  17. Thanks. I have the first two covered but hadn't thought of the last one.
  18. If anyone has any specific questions related to the topic please feel free to post here or PM me and I will make sure to include information. My goal is to educate in general on the topic as well as discuss some thoughts/ideas related to it in order to pique some curriosity and drive experimentation with different options.
  19. I have been using some of the Finnex HMA recently and I am pretty happy with them so far.
  20. I wanted to post and say I will not be able to make it to this meeting due to coaching a soccer game for my daughter's team. It ends at 4 and I was going to try to make it to the meeting but with the change across town I won't be able to make it there before the meeting ends. Since I am nominated for the education chair, I wanted to type a post to give just a bit about me and my aquarium keeping experience. I have had aquariums all my life, my father had marine and freshwater aquariums when I was a kid. Some of the first memories are of a seahorse, a iridescent shark and a stingray he had in various aquariums. As I grew older I kept freshwater aquariums myself and as a kid loved raising mollies and swordtails. I even kept freshwater aquariums in college. Finally in 2004 I started my first reef tank and it has grown from there. I have a huge interest in breeding fish and so I have focused more on that than keeping a large reef tank. I do have a 10g nano reef but then I also have probably 120+ gallons of various cultures and broodstock tanks. I have successfully raised a few species of clownfish, some gobies, and a couple inverts. I am excited to be the education chair, if elected, as I think the thing I enjoy as much as anything is the constant learning and research that is required for reefkeeping in general and especially (for me) breeding the marine species. I look forward to trying to present information for each meeting in a hopefully new and exciting way and really using our club not only as a gateway to be hobbyists but also better hobbyists. Thanks! Daniel
  21. Previous comment is correct. Unless you have a massive tank adding another pair is not a good idea. They would likely fight and you would end up having only 2.
  22. Get some Dr Tim's One and Only or Fritzyme 9. Several professional aquarists I know use those, especially Dr Tim's, and those two are legit. Make sure you get good fresh batches though.
