  1. Well unfortunately there won't be a lot of play time, We are going there for research and hopefully we will ahve a day before we set sail to explore a little bit... we're a geologists so mostly planning on taking a hike up to a nearby volcano and through a little rainforest...then it's anchors away for three weeks at sea! I did find this article that was written about my trip, it was in several local papers but didn't know it was on the web until today. Cheers! B
  2. got rid of it! just put the website up. thanks!
  3. Hey all! Kinda bummed that i'll be missing the Feb. meeting, but I will be in Costa Rica where the weather is beautiful. I wanted to post up a link to a blog that I set up through ISU and am planning on updating each day of the trip. As a refresher. I am heading to Costa Rica as part of an interdisciplinary research team to study the faunal ecology surrounding authigenic methane seeps. Methane seeps are sort of the lesser known cousin of Hydrothermal vents, in which case the opposite is true. In methane seeps, cold liquid methane is seeping from carbonate rocks as a result of decay and increased pressure. The liquid methane has been found to supply an incredible variety of chemotrophic organisms with a methane buffet of sorts for organisms from fish to bacteria (all of which are being studied in some aspect of this trip). My research focuses on Ostracodes and Foraminifera that may be living near the seeps. to do this we will be using the ALVIN submersible to monitor the seafloor a couple thousand meters down and take samples of the various life-forms and sediment/rocks that we find. Should be very exciting and i look forward to sharing my experience with you all when i get back! I leave on monday so wish me luck gang! Here is the www.blogs.indstate.edu/~wpmu/brian Brian
  4. guess i'm just lucky, i just tossed mine in...he's great!
  5. That's a Fromia star. buddy of mine picked one up at PA this past weekend too. He likes it a lot so far. Bummer about the linkia's, I've had a blue in my tank now for over a year, he's a roamer, always on the move. Great looking star by the way scott, really love your tank so far!
  6. Yeah it's a gorgonian. The stuff will go nuts but it is really easy to tear off the rocks so it won't be too big a deal when it starts to become annoyingly large.
  7. I used to always run XM's. they are very bright, nice color, and great price. couple years ago i decided to switch to 14K hamiltons...never was able to go back. Always hated having too much blue but the Hammy's just make the coral colors go nuts without looking fake. Still love the XM's as a 10K though

    Snow Day!

I'm starting to go crazy here! I've had four days off from work... i'm too restless for that business! Get me outta here!
  9. well cool! Keep us posted on how it works out!
  10. just throwing this out...the frogfish are anglers just really pretty, little ones! on another note... i've usually seen them all black, black and white, or a nice yellow w/some red...I still have yet to run across those killer looking white ones like in the picture above. Most of the different Antennarius species are pretty but the maculatus and the pictus stay small and are both relatively colorful...others like the commerson's get really big...you don't want that! B
  11. are you feeding him or just letting him scavenge the tank for delicious little starfish? just curious i always liked those guys but never gave one a shot...didn't want to have to buy little stars for it. Let me know how he works out!
  12. If you can get a frogfish ordered, try having them hold it in the shipping bag before you get it, or pick it up as soon as possible. i've seen pet stores over-feed them (because it's cool to watch) but their metabolisms can't keep up and it is normally detrimental -watching them "walk" is the coolest!
  13. They actually do have some pretty decent SPS right now, but it will cost you an arm and a leg. Really nice guys but prices are way high always have been ( i worked there for a long time). always cool to go look around though, so if you don't think you will miss your limbs and just want to get away for the day then i'd say go.
  14. Frogfish grow very slowly due to their high metabolism. Antennarius maculatus would be a decent choice as they stay fairly small anyway...not to mention they are beautiful and don't need to be fed all too often.
  15. that will actually work better by keeping the ambient temp in the room lower.
