Hello All!

We're new to the society and saltwater tanks. Just started our first one in a 55G. We've already acquired some rock, anemones, coral, and algae but are curious about getting some cleaners. Any suggestions on where best to get some or what exactly we should be looking for? Thanks in advance for the advise and we'll hopefully meet several of you at the meeting this weekend!

Welcome! When it comes to a clean up crew,I personally only run two work horses. 1 type of snail. Trochus to be exact. I would start with about 24 if you choose these. Best all around cleaner I think and capable of flipping themselves back if they fall on their backs. They are on the more expensive side for snails. The second would be hermit crabs. Any type really is good. Blue leg. Red leg. Scarlets hermits. Blue knuckle. Halloween hermit. Last two are more of a decorative addition though. The best advice I can give you for choosing any of these is to not purchase any that are tiny. Stick with middle of the road to full size  both should be around the 3/4” to 1-1/2”

Are you running bare bottom or with sand. If sand then get a conch snail and or a few nassarius snails for the sandbed

We are running a sand bottom. 

I also have a sump that's 27? Gallons, I think, and a portion of that is a refugium that also has live sand and chaeto from @Drumsscott. It's running as it's own separate tank right now basically. I wanted to give it a week or so to settle before pumping water through it. 

 

Whats you guys experience with the site Reef Cleaners? I sent them all my specs and everything and they emailed me back with a list of different cleaners that would be "ideal".

I’ve never used reef cleaners. I’m more of a got to see it with my own eyes when it comes to livestock. Plus it always helps to support your Local Fish Store. The LFS’s usually stock common cuc or can get in almost anything you would want.

15 Florida Ceriths

12 Astraeas or 8 Trochus

3 Indo Turbos

1 Chaeto

 

We decided to try them, I met a few people local that have used them pretty reliably over time. 

I didn't get Chaeto from them as I've got a good amount to start with. I did add 2 of the small conchs (adding them made shipping free)
