  1. Very cool write up. Steve Tyree has some interesting theories on this from when he built his cryptic sponge zone for ultra low nutrient systems. There's been speculation that this is how he gets some of the great colors to stay in this coral. Possibly a much more natural way to feed corals in our closed systems rather than having to supplement with "otc" foods.
  2. Read this today. http://news.yahoo.com/the-ocean-is-broken-133327474.html
  3. I got these guys from Justin at Bloomington Fish Gallery. I'd rather not post prices as they do fluctuate depending on supply and demand. On a sad note. I woke up on Sunday and found the female(Wyoming White) laying on the floor in front of the tank. I do have another in the works but just hate to lose something due to what could be my negligence. .
  4. Anyone else wanting in on this? We need 2 more to qualify and, if he's willing, Dustin to set it up again. I am down to my last 2 water changes worth of salt and am doing one this coming weekend so if this doesn't get ordered soon I will have to back out and just buy a bucket.
  5. I will most likely just meet you at the avon location. I am bringing the truck but we could definitely use another(and some more hands, this is a big tank people!). Depending on everyone's location, I can pick people up Saturday morning if you don't have a truck or don't want to drive. And remember, help out a member in need and the return can be terrific(Amanda said pizza and beer! I think anyway...may have imagined that)
  6. The pods I can't vouch for but I know every time I've ordered from reefcleaners my snails have taken a couple days to move around.
  7. I'll talk with some non fish friends and see if I can't get a couple strong arms to help out. The sooner you can give a start time would help out to get a couple people. I can def have a truck to help out with the haul too.
  8. These guys have been in the tank since Saturday evening(10/5/2013) and are doing good. Just wanted to show them off a little and thank Justin and Morgan for QTing them for me. http://www.flickr.com/photos/75014373@N03/10189564986/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/75014373@N03/10189547905/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/75014373@N03/10189532595/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/75014373@N03/10189539975/
  9. Emeralds are all I've ever used besides manual removal. I know that some people on here aren't fans of reefcleaners but they guarantee theirs to eat bubble algae.
  10. Oh, and a big thank you for heading up this whole buy!
  11. Leonard, let me know when the order arrives. I have to head to work no later than 2pm but can pick up or meet you before that. If we can't get that arranged then I'd love for Ross to hold my stuff, since I have to get to his place and pick up some stuff He's been holding for quite some time for me also...
  12. I'd be available for next weekend( the 19th) and could probably have a pickup to help haul some but not everything at once. Just let us know when you decide to do it. I think I know the tank you're talking about too and it looked really nice. I loved the built in RODI.
  13. Let's please not get a flame war going, though I do love to sit by a bonfire... But seriously, thank you to everyone who is chiming in. I'm taking it all in and doing as much research as I can. There have been many points(some of which I don't even understand, ie. customizations, what the actual cutting edge software is... ) that I never thought of and it helps to have a group to bring these things to my attention. I have a lot of people at work talking up mac's in the sense that because the hardware isn't "cutting edge" that it will last longer and work faster for longer than Windows based machines. I guess I don't understand why unless it has to do with memory and storage, which I always understood was better on a PC anyway?
  14. Anyone looking to buy more salt soon? I'm getting low and am planning right now.
  15. Definitely go with an SSD - the asus is nice as you get the speed/reliability of an SSD and have a traditional harddrive to hold your pics/adult videos/etc. Very valid point. Lol I never really thought about the keyboard being an issue of choice on laptop. It'd be really nice to keep a number pad and I do like the backlit keyboards that I've played with. I haven't been to Fry's in years so that's a great idea. Speakers aren't really a concern since I either use external or headphones. I've def looked into weight as an issue, especially once I start classes back up I'll be carrying it around a lot. I guess school is a big thing that makes me lean towards mac. With the classes I'll be taking there are a lot of presentations I'll be doing for homework and my job now whenever I have to justify my findings on research i try and do a video instead of just a simple pictorial. I'll have to head up to Fry's and see what I play with.
  16. I'll mostly be using it for surfing the web but will end up using it for different database storage also. Plus I'm going back to finish my biology degree in 2014 so it'll become a school computer after that(main reason I'm leaning towards laptop). I do play a little with video/audio editing which is why I started looking into mac in the first place, but I've always had PC's so I'm a little leary to make the jump. I'm not sure that I'd utilize multiple screens if I had them or not but like the thought of the option. The only thing I wish was better about this laptop is that it was a little faster with multiple programs open. It's an old Gateway.
  17. Good call Leonard. I'll be using it mostly just for online home stuff(INDMAS, tank, fish, and equipment research), but also I'll have to use it for work a little too. The one thing that sways me to Windows is MS Office, but I think I can get an Apple version too.
  18. I'm in the market for a new home computer(leaning way towards a laptop but not ruling out a desktop just yet). I'm wondering what some of your opinions are on Mac vs. Windows. I've always had Windows machines before but have been looking into the MacBook Pro's here lately. Anyone have any experience or advice that would sway me one way or the other? And for you experts out there(Dustin!), you may have to dumb it down for me just a bit... Thanks for your help, Ryan
  19. Order placed. I changed it a little Leonard. I got 1 order of mangroves and 2 orders of red gracilaria.
  20. Leonard, put me in for 2 orders of red mangroves. I've been wanting to try them out in my fuge.
  21. This is almost exactly what I have. My Ca stays pretty steady but my Alk will drop. I make my own Alk and Ca supplements and easily use double the Alk(part 1). I haven't had any adverse effects from just dosing Alk.
