  1. I doubt a dying coral would produce that sort of smell. First thing that comes to mind is, when was the last time you cleaned your skimmer cup? Typically it's really nasty stuff after a more than a week IME. Second thing that comes to mind is snails.. They are the stinkiest thing on earth when dead. Check the tank, and check outside as well in case one has crawled out. You can tell if those inside are dead by pulling them out and taking a whiff, but don't get your nose too close on the first smell for risk of gagging and hurling on the floor.. JMTC & GL!
  2. Not sure if anyone mentioned this but, if using a ground probe, having everything on a GFCI is a life or death (*yours* not your fish) requirement.. Using a grounding probe without a proper GFCI can kill you in certain situations where you become part of the path to ground, say bumping your elbow on a malfunctioning light fixture while in contact with the water.

  4. From the pictures, it appears to be some sort of sea slug to me..
  5. Just to add my two cents, I've had good success with using a CO2 scrubber on the skimmer inlet to raise pH. They are quite effective. It really helps in those months when the house is closed up. More information on them can be found on RC.
  6. I'd agree that removing the center brace is risky and would go with the acrylic replacement for some measure of safety if you really must do it.
  7. Sorry for your losses/trouble. I think you are on the right track with the w/c and adding carbon. Assuming you double/triple checked all parameters and all is pretty much okay.. You mentioned your sand bed being fairly undisturbed, but did you notice any sulfur smells during or after the move process? How thick is the sand? Hang in there..
  8. Honestly, I'd recommend that anyone serious about their setup to get a controller. Even a used apex jr, or aquaconrtroller jr would be a better investment IMO. By the time you get lighting timers, ATO controller, pH controller, temp controller, wave maker, etc. - you have much much more feature rich system with a dedicated unit for the purpose. You should be able to pick up a used one for $100 or less. JMTC & GL!
  9. Same here. clicking gallery shows me as ryansweet.
  10. Have you tried blowing air into the air inlet of the pump while it's chugging? tube in mouth, blow. I know.. /shrug Seriously though, I had an old skimmer pump that would only start this way. Can be a problem on power failures if it occurs frequently and you're not around.
  11. Like Dustin mentioned, the hanna phosphorus meter is much better and provides a lower range reading. I've owned both the Hanna phosphate and their phosphorus meter and highly suggest as many others do to get the latter for more precise results at the low levels which should be maintained in a reef tank. JMTC & GL!
  12. A soak in a solution of 20 percent bleach (unscented) and water will take care of the live stuff in about an hour. Just be sure to rinse well to remove the bleach. Air drying and/or use of a dechlorinator can help if worried about residual bleach. I soak equipment in the bleach solution, then in a 50/50 vinegar/water solution for a couple of hours afterward, that seems to take care of any buildups with very little scrubbing work remaining. JMTC & GL!
  13. Wow! Congrats to you and your wife!! Good looking little guy, he must get that from Mommy.. Try not to spend too much time on the tank. Trust me, it seems like kids grow up so fast, before you even know it. Enjoy your time off too!
