  1. That's actually pretty cool. Quite tempting to get in on it, would be perfect for a tank. Moisture sensors to detect leaks, outlet controls, etc... Handy my router is also less than 3' from the tank so virtually no wiring The big selling point is the compatibility with Z-Wave, there's TONS of support for products there already so any shortcomings SmartThings would have as far as sensors/controls and whatnot are easily taken care of. Good find!
  2. Thanks for the help. That's the answer I expected to hear, there wasn't much left as a possibility I just didn't have a way to test without running out for another membrane and didnt want to rack up anymore expenses if that wasn't it. Sent you a pm regarding pickup.
  3. Wish I'd bothered to check the thread before now lol. I needed some. Another time, another place I guess! Likewise on the meeting some new faces. I've read a LOT of information on here over the years despite never really posting until recent so it was nice to attach some faces to what I've learned from the members on here. Thanks to everyone that put it all together and thanks to Kevin and the staff at the reef for the hospitality and the raffle prizes. The gift certificate will definitely help fill up the new tank!
  4. I've never tried a "small" tank before. The smallest reef setup I've currently had running is a 20gal which was lightly stocked and pretty easy to maintain. I figured this is as good a place as any to get a little feedback if it's worth my trouble. The plan... I have a Marineland 5g acrylic hex tank that was used to house some smaller freshwater aquatic plants as well as some of the dwarf puffer fish some time ago. It's been sitting and well it needs a new purpose in life or needs to move to a new home. I'm thinking a small project of sorts. If you're not familiar with it the tank is roughly a foot across and about 15" in height. Each panel of the hex is about 6" across. There's a thin frame around the top that would allow use of a small coralife PC fixture/DIY LEDs or I can use the stock hood/light (preferred method) and replace the bulb with a 50/50 10w that I already have. I'm thinking of either using the built in filter though rather small or if I ditch the hood/filter in favor of better lighting I could use a spare AC30 or AC50 I have lying around as mod it into a hob fuge. Additional flow if necessary would likely come from Rio 50 that's just lying around or a koralia nano, also lying around. I have an add on coralife moonlight kit I could mod into the hood as well to make this as close to a "real" tank as I can. As far as stocking goes I was just thinking of small softie frags, perhaps a shrimp or something and the normal collage of snails/crabs. No fish most likely and if anything maybe a yellow watchman goby once its been going for a bit. The reasoning behind keeping the hood with the lower power light would be to control evaporation and hopefully have a slightly more stable tank. If this route is chosen the current reflector is far from efficient being brushed stainless steel and having odd angles. I will polish it out or make another polished one which would be similar in design to a PFO Mogul MH reflector and maybe up the bulb to a 20w model provided heat isn't an issue as I'd like to stay away from any type of fan to slow evaporation as much as possible. I'd like to not drop a pile of cash into the light as if it proves to be successful and gratifying I'd likely go to a DIY led with 60-90 degree optics installed. I wasn't planning on a skimmer which is why the hob fuge was preferred. I'll pull the rock I need from my DT so there should be little if any cycle there. I'll still give it a week or two to make sure all kinks are worked out/stable. Any suggestions or does this seem like a relatively sound plan? I figured I'd give it a shot, I'd like to keep the budget super low ($50) as I have most everything already and if I get bored with it I won't be mad at myself.
  5. All filters in the unit are brand new.
  6. Did you ever consider plastidip? I know many who've used it on their car wheels with great success, even one who coats his chrome wheels for use in winter then removes when weather permits. Completely clean and corrosion free. Now wethet a decade of salt water drips and splashes is too much for the product I couldn't say. From my understanding as long as you don't compromise the layer it should last a very long time, much like bed liner does. Seems like you've got a lot of work yet. When the time comes ill lend a hand as long as I'm free that day. Good luck with the rest of the build
  7. Thanks to JR for coming out for a little assistance! Unfortunately we weren't able to resolve the issue. The membrane is possibly faulty we think. Everything is in place and all connections, filters and whatnot are in good working order/condition. Incoming pressure is just fine so there isn't too much else that could be wrong. The restrictor is the blue one which is the proper piece for the 60gpd Hi-S membrane. I ordered these together awhile back and then shelved the unit as I had to postpone my hobby for awhile so I'm stuck with it I'm sure. If I get an opportunity I'll try and bring it on down to Premium, I'm on the other side of town however. I let the unit run overnight and got maybe 1/2gal of product water over 10hrs. I didn't even bother to check tds since clearly there is still an issue.
  8. Sounds good to me. I'm not really sure when ill be wrapped up tomorrow but ill pm you contact info. Thanks. Noodlenugs: if we can't figure it out I'll definitely get some pics but I reprinted the directions from the manufacturer and checked everything about a dozen times.
  9. Thanks guys. You're right, they are 1w led. They're pretty bright for what they are though. I was surprised to read the specs myself. This is my first time owning and led fixture. The only other ones I'd seen were the Solaris lights a few years ago and knew this would be nothing like that. I'm sure it will be upgraded at some point, I'm going to make sure i still have a genuine interest in everything before I make the move on a pricey led setup though. I suppose if I wanted to hang it I have 175 and 400w MH setup in the garage but I do like the low heat of the led being the tank is on the small side and the room tends to be a little warmer than the rest of the house. It maintains a steady 79-80 degrees with no heater in the tank. I never had a lot of corals in the old tank because it was a little small. I jumped on the "nano" bandwagon early and picked up a Red Sea Max at The Reef when they were first launched. Mostly zoas, gsp, a green toadstool, and some other odds and ends I forget as its been a couple years. I need to dig it out, clean it up and decide if I want it setup or sell it to fund some more lighting/equipment for the 44. The 44 is honestly the test bed to make sure I'm still ready to do this. I've been hoarding a RR 92g corner setup for awhile now. Its complete with pumps, lighting, sump, etc but will be a serious investment to get online and how I want it as ill need extra electrical capacity run to accommodate it in the room of choice.
  10. Ill be there. I haven't been in to see Kevin and the staff for quite some time now. They've been very helpful in the past. Maybe ill find some goodies for the new tank while I'm there as long as things progress smoothly w the recent move.
  11. I purchased the correct flow restrictor from the manufacturer. I don't have a pressure gauge on the unit but I've tested what we get at the faucet previously and its well above what the manufacturer reccomends as a minimum. Iirc it was around 55psi. Its been awhile but I know it was at least that. I do not have a booster pump but the previous owners of the home used to have a below sink RO system that worked without one so I would assume the same is possible now. I'm sort of lost here. You wouldn't think it would be difficult with something that has so few parts to go wrong, lol. Thats how it is sometimes though.
  12. Put a new membrane in, slid in as far as I could get it and when I went to flush it for first time use all I get is 100% waste water. Nothing comes out of the product tubing. Upon looking up some specs on their site it indicates the membrane is supposed to be about 3/4" from the top of the housing and it is not. No amount of force will push it in any further. I've verified that all connections arr secure and in the proper order. I've even fine as far as removing the flush kit from the waste water side is to rule out some sort of malfunction there. Any suggestions? I ordered the part number indicated in the manual so its the correct membrane. I bought this as a used setup and this is the first time trying it out. No original membrane came with it and everything is in very good physical condition. Tia! Fwiw I'm co-owner of Pure Reflections Detail and if someone can make it to Brownsburg (I live dead north of the main gate of Lucas Oil Raceway) for a little in person help Ill gladly return the favor and offer up a wash and wax on your vehicle.
  13. My 44g Pentagon tank I just picked up last night. It was established for about 4 1/2months by the previous owner. Roughly 35lbs of Fiji Rock, striped damsel, true perc clown, a couple of softie's up top and lit by a Marineland Reef Capable LED light. I've been out of the game for a couple years due to kids being born and I took this tank on a rescue of sorts from a customer of mine that just didn't have the time anymore due to starting a new job. Hope to make it as nice as some of the others on this site. The "canopy" if you want to call it that is a DIY from the previous owner. I plan to make it fully enclosed w/ some powered ventilation to quiet things down a bit and keep the light from spilling out. It's a pretty simple setup. Seaclone 100 doing the dirty work along with an AC50 and some added flow via a Koralia EVO 1050. Everything seems to like the setup as it is so I probably wont tinker with it much until things are settled down a bit from the move. Definitely going to be looking for some frags soon so if you've got something colorful drop me a PM. I'm located in Brownsburg by the drag strip.
  14. finally back in the hobby after two years
