About Me

Hello! My name is Niki Gessler. I own Grey Dog Gallery in Gosport, In. In June of 2017 I had a great plan to give a public aquarium to the people of Gosport. I've been working on the first installment ever since, a 22 gallon, open-top reef with a regfugium and algae scrubber. Oh, and I made a facebook page for it so everyone can keep up with the progress! The tank is located in my gallery so not only can I stare at it for 6 hours a day, but the public can enjoy it as well!

But we have big plans for expansion. There is another room behind the gallery that I think would make a perfect public aquarium! I think that's just what this little town is missing.

A little about my experience in the hobby: I was introduced to reef keeping during my career ;) at Petco. My first tank was a 5 gallon reef, which soon grew to an 11 gallon reef, and eventually I added a 2 gallon reef. The 2 gallon was an installation in the University's art museum that accompanied my thesis painting show (oil paintings of the reef that I titled 'Local Color'). After school, and after moving from Petco, things seemed to get too expensive and I dropped out of the hobby.

Things have changed a bit since then, but the oceans are even trashier than ever and I believe it's our responsibility to teach the next generation empathy for the reef. The best way to do this, especially in the land-locked midwest, is to put kids face to face with the amazing creatures that are in danger of habitat loss and show them how their actions can truly make a difference.

Check out my newest reef paintings for my up incoming show!Β
