  1. Uhhhh....yes! Thanks for getting in touch with him. I'll follow up
  2. haha I'm sure we can all say we've been there with pests. I've trimmed the xenia back.
  3. I've got a decent rock of red sea xenia and of course it's growing like mad. I keep it trimmed back, but I'm just curious how potent it would be if it accidentally got a little out of control before I could trim it back again. I have a piece of green stag SPS that xenia is just barely touching when the flow hits it. Of course I'm going to ultimately trim it back, but I'm just curious.
  4. I've been curious about it since the claims are good, and it's a very cheap, if not free test. I've also seen more about it on larger forums like RC and R2R that no one is actually seeing the stated benefits. I'd like to give it a try but I might be too lazy....we'll see what happens. haha.
  5. Yeah I was totally not expecting that. I sort of still dont believe it. When I get back I'm going to get another test kit and make sure.
  6. So I got called out of town for a week by work, sucks but whatever. I start doing my normal maintenance and making sure the tank will be good to go. I'm just finishing up the last little bits, and I want to refill the apex auto feeder to make sure there is enough in it. To open it you just pull on the front and the whole canister comes out. A bad design about it is that this front lip you're pulling on is also the lid. It's never crossed my mind about the risk in doing this until it happened. The canister didnt come out but the lid popped off, pouring probably a 1/4 - 1/2 cup of pellets and crushed flakes into the tank. OMFG you've got to be kidding me! I freak out for a couple seconds then immediately grab my large net and just start going crazy in the tank trying to get as much food as possible. The wife grabs a strainer from the kitchen and starts helping. I pulled so much food out it just made me freak out even more. About a minute in all the food starts to sink. I get the turkey baster and suck up as much as possible but the food is just everywhere! I turn my MP's on full blast constant to try to stir up as much as possible which really helped, but there is so much food still in the tank all I can think about is the nitrate and po4 explosion about to happen tomorrow. I put the MP's on short pulse full strength, enough to get a decent size standing wave going in the tank. I leave them on that for probably and hour while sucking food out with the baster in the little eddy areas that it's now starting to collect in. The horrible thing was there was so much food stacked behind the rocks that I couldnt get to, and I wasnt about to re-aqua scape the entire tank the day before I leave. I got another power head and just plugged it in and used it to spray out behind the rocks and everywhere inbetween. Of course doing this kicked up a load of sand but luckily it didnt cloud. After a couple of hours I was able to get all of the food that I could see. I turn everything back to normal and hope for the best. A couple days ago I tested nitrates and they were at 1. This morning I test po4 and nitrates. I couldnt even get a read on nitrates they were so low. WTF, no way. I dont believe it. I test again, same results. PO4 is a slight tinge higher but not even at 0.025. I guess me washing down behind the rocks and sucking all the crud out helped me drop my nitrates! Crisis averted (I hope). Oh it's not over yet Due to all the crazy wind we had, my friend's tank has been without power for 2 hours. He has the battery backups on his MP's in his DT, but his frag tank has no backup anything. I cleaned my stuff up, then rush over to his house with my power inverter so he can turn heaters on in both tanks and flow in his frag tank. Maybe 30 min later he's up and running with heat and flow. Wives are getting drunk on wine...we're running around making sure tanks are ok. We order in some food and just calm down since there is nothing else we can do. About 11pm the power comes back on and stays for a good hour so we call it good. Luckily everything in his tank is fine. Temps only got to around 74 or so, but he keeps his tanks normally at 78. Whew....crazy tank day.
  7. I wouldnt say a lot of flow. I have 3 voyagers (I think the 1600 gph) on a red sea wave maker. 2 are center left to right creating back and forth in a 6' tank, 3rd is left side mounted but pointing towards the top of the water column creating surface agitation.
  8. I have had 3 BTA's in my tank for a couple months now. They wont quit moving!!! I'm not too worried about them in power heads, I'm mostly worried about them killing coral. Every morning I have to move coral out of their way in the new spot they pop up that day. They've been at this for over a month. Every time I think they have their spot, a few days later they're on the move again. I think 1 of the 3 has it's permanent spot (hopefully) but the other 2 are still moving all over the tank. Any tips to get these guys to stop and just stay? I dont mind where, just as long as they stop! haha.
  9. This. Assuming it's a reef, if your PH is off, your alk is likely off. For reference, my alk is rock solid at 8.5 but my ph goes between 8.23 and 8.30
  10. How bad are the stings? Will they wipe out corals that they move by or just irritate them? I'm sure a nem sitting on top of a coral like my pic will kill it. I'm just curious about it since 1 of mine seem to be on the move a lot right now in a higher dense coral area of the tank.
  11. I think if the nem doesnt move when the lights go off I'll move the cynarina tonight. I dont want to chance it.
  12. Nems are on the move....they have been all week. I'm trying to play referee with with them and the coral. This one looks like it's picked a very nice spot but it's right on top of a cynarina. I dont want to move the cynarina just for the nem to move again so I did what I could think of, put a glass bowl over it so it doesnt get stung. I was hoping the nem would have kept on the move but he hasent, which ok.... maybe tonight. I'm curious if it's a good idea to keep this bowl over the coral all night while I wait for the nem to move. It's not going to be getting much flow under there. What would you do?
  13. Dude.....lol. Thats the 2nd one today. My friend is putting anthiases into my tank while he figures out his bio load situation. He has 1 male and 3 females. He mistyped a text to someone else saying "as long as we do all the females at the same time things will be ok" I can only imagine.
  14. Oh did you buy those picasso's! I wanted them so bad but they're not a good idea in my tank. Awesome pair!
  15. I've been having some issues with my clowns. For the past week they've separated and stayed on opposite sides of the tank for over a week now. I've had them since juveniles which they still sort of are. They were always together, but here recently the male has gone to the other side of the 6' tank and wont come over to the female. I was pretty worried about it, but just letting them do their thing. They would always hang out around the power heads and figured they were starting to host them. A little bummed out, I thought about some of the drastic ways to get them to anemone host but I didnt want to do that at all to these little guys. Anyways, I was out running around today and came home to this!!!!! SO EXCITING! She is hosting the anemone big time and is now protective of it. It's just her hosting it. Hopefully the smaller male will see this and join her.
  16. Modern aquatix may still have some. I know he had 2-3 left last time I was there.
  17. Here is my quick and dirty basement sump setup. I'll expand on it a lot more later, but I had to get something setup asap.
  18. Thanks Ryan. I'm to the point that everything is 99% finished. As of last night the tank is up and running. I just have a few odds and ends to finish up like putting the dosers and auto-feeder on. Wiring isnt the greatest since I was in a rush but I can clean that up now that I have a few minutes. Everyone seems happy. Good news is that I found my melanurus wrasse! He didnt die after all. I forgot they burried in the sand. I had a couple tupperwares with sand in the temp tank for the inverts and sand star. He must have buried in there when I took out all the live rock to transfer into the large tank. The worst thing of the whole ordeal happened in the new tank. I think I had some rocks shift when the Kole Tang was trying to hide in them and now he's scratched and beaten up very badly. He's out and swimming but you can tell he's probably hurting bad since his swim motion isnt perfect and he's not darting around like normal. I believe he should be able to make it through though. With me deciding to make the move over to the basement sump this has been basically an entire new tank setup with all new plumbing and everything. 1 star rating, would not recommend doing it days before you leave on vacation. The tank is silent now though which is awesome. Now to clean up the mess I made....haha
  19. Wow what a couple of days it's been. All plumbing done with the basement sump. All live rock is in the new tank. It's about 1/2 full with water, just enough to keep the live rock under. I was hoping to have the fish in it since now the rubbermade tote is live rock'less but the water isnt heating up fast enough. Hopefully everyone will be OK until the morning when the water will be warm enough for them to go into the new tank without creating ammonia like they are in the tote. edit: moved a few large pieces of live rock into the tote to give them something. They're now about pound for gallon of live rock in the tote. They will be good until the morning. Only casulities so far: melanarus wrasse. I can tell my green mandarin isnt doing so well. I doubt he'll make it very long.
  20. My awesome 100g reef haha. I have my apex and ATO on it. Old tank completely out, new stand in. Going to start building the sump stand and get ready to figure out what all plumbing I need to run everything into the basement right below it.
  21. I'm thinking about not running a skimmer in the temp tank for the 2 weeks. I'll have carbon and GFO running to help keep the water clean. Is this a good idea or do I need to get to work on making a skimmer fit.
  22. I'm strongly considering slowing down and taking this time to do a basement sump project that I've been wanting to do for some time now. The fish are ok in the tote, which they'll probably stay in for about 2 weeks. I'll setup my apex and ATO on the tote and basically treat it like a full aquarium temporarily. I'm taking my SPS to modern for him to house while I'm going through all of this. Drilling and cleaning this tank and getting the basement work area setup will be the goal for today.
  23. Here is how I am as of 8am this morning. Both tanks in the garage. I need to get the new one out and drill it, then clean it. Then I can start moving the stand and tank into the house and start setting it up.
  24. I work mostly from home so I'm always around my tank. For the past week or so I've been hearing these little poping sounds coming from my tank. Nothing loud enough to warrant any worry. I was joking with my friend that I must have a pistole shrimp as a hitchhiker somewhere. Well Friday about 2pm I hear a loud pop, much louder than any animal inside the tank can make. I get up and go look at the tank and I notice the black panel around the edges is cracked in all corners, as well as I can now see water inside the silicon in one of the corners. I immediately go into freak out mode and text everyone tank related I know will immediately reply. They all said not good, Jeremy said drain it ASAP it's about to be really bad. I get my two large 40g water change bins, fill those up. I run to my friends house who has a 100g rubbermade and I transfer all live rock into that, fill that up about 3/4 way and transfer all livestock into it and another 40g bin. I get the tank drained in a matter of an hour. Usually I would take this opportunity to upgrade into something nice. I dont have that option this round since we're leaving for vacation this Friday. I have to find a tank and get it running stable for a few days so I know it'll be ok without any supervision for a week after. I find a tank on craigslist (no other options in my time rush) that is similar size (6' 125g) and now have that and my old tank in my garage by 8pm. The new tank isnt drilled and needs a really good cleaning, so thats what I'll be doing this morning. I'm hoping to have the new tank filled by tonight. I'm not going to rush it, but I'm going to get things done today haha. I'll post updates today and tomorrow as I make progress.
