tprize
I will test my top off water, and do a major clean and water change this weekend
tprize
So did the test, all water sources going in are 0ppm tank is still bad https://photos.app.goo.gl/uzMkbSZNenjadXPA7 Tested salt mix pre water change DKH: 10 Calc 320 also pulled all filters out, and did not realize how much settling happens in the rear chambers. So I went to town turkey basting https://photos.app.goo.gl/j1dRrDTYcpiA6LZx7 will test again tomorrow, and also try to go by and have Modern Aq... run a test for me
tprize
So had Modern Aquatics run my water Calcium was 400 DKH was 8.5 Nitrates were 80 so in addition to water changes, he recommended no3 p04 X from red sea
tprize
So will test again this weekend, things seem to be doing better, my corals are really opening up. I do have hair algae showing up, I’m hoping that if I can get my levels to the correct place it will go away. https://photos.app.goo.gl/8B8EBVGpXCYu3p2t9 Edited January 25, 2019 by tprize
tprize
Newest numbers +- change from before Mag: 1280 Calc: 320. +20 Phos 0 -.25 DKH 8 +2 Nitrate 20 -60 PH 8 Amon 0 Nitirite
ReefNewby82
Looks like you are making some headway for sure. Good job! The nitrate spread is quite a bit...what test kit are you using again?
tprize
API, but I'm hoping the Nitrate drop has to do with full rear sump chamber cleaning, new filter media, multiple water changes, reduced (targeted feeding), and daily Red sea NO3/PO4 - X
tanknovice
If you can, come to the February meeting. Battling Algae will be the education topic
ReefNewby82
Also bring a water sample as the club has test kits for you can use. Another great benefit of being an INDMAS member!
tprize
Well tests came back nitrates 0 phos 0, so my hope is the green hair algae will start to die out as I starve them. Anything else I should be doing to reduce the algae?
ReefNewby82
Manual removal as best as possible, could do lights out for up to 72 hours...and inverts like scarlet red legs, chestnut turbos or red stripe trochus are good at assisting. tprize
Went on vacation, had someone care for the tank, came back to a trifecta of algae, had the hair algae, now I have some red algae and bright green algae. I just can’t win. Going to do tests and a water exchange will report back. What else should I do? Here is a pic: I need a full court press on this. https://photos.app.goo.gl/wULFtmTNDNXQdchj6
ReefNewby82
Bigger size water change...manual removal and treat with ReefFlux/HD perhaps. Turn lights off for 72 hours and follow reef HD directions. Change out all filter socks or filter floss etc
tprize
Perfect, treatment should be done just in time for frag swap, which is the most important thing. I hoping there is a system to win, so I can just upgrade.😀
ReefNewby82
There sure is! But I think I'm gonna win that one
MrsBugmaster
I've been reading a lot lately on adding the "good" live bacteria and dosing live phyto to help fight algae. Our tanks get "out of balance" bacteria wise with all the filtering we do with skimmers, uv sterilizer, and adding other chemicals and such. One bacteria ends up taking over, consuming, all the others and there is not enough diversity in our tanks for a natural control. We need to regularly dose these things back into our tank, more of a natural way to dealing with algae instead of chemicals all the time. This is something I am currently experimenting with myself. MrsBugmaster
I am using Dr Tim's Eco Balance and I also like Dr Tim's Waste Away. Don't add them at same time. Wait a week or so apart. Follow direction closely. Different phyto's have different strains in them so mix it up and don't always use the same thing. No matter which brand you use, read their websites to find out what all they have in them. I like to use Sustainable Aquatic and Algea Barns OceanMagik
tprize
Well things are going great! https://photos.app.goo.gl/cEB3xXqVJVXZdjJk8 Thanks to everyone’s advice! I went with prodibio bio-clean bacteria, and with the algae management, water changes, and 72 hours lights out the tank looks like a future tank of the month.
