Skimmer really needed?!?!

Recommended Posts

That would depend on what nutrient export you planned on doing without a skimmer. As in...how large of water changes would you do? Would you run a phosphate reactor? What kind of corals?

^ What he said...

My 20g frag tank isn't planned to have a skimmer but I'll have a pretty hefty filtration media setup with dual media racks which I could run gfo, phosguard, purigen, carbon, etc. I do have a small skimmer for it to use if necessary however.

I don't run one on the biocube 14. But I do about 50% water change every three weeks . It has some filter floss and carbon that gets rinsed weekly. This also has a 3 fish. Peppermint shrimp emerald crabs and an anemone plus about 20 corals.

Again, heavily dependent on what's in your tank. Realistically for a 20 gallon tank though I don't think you would need one. Invest in good filtration, media +/- reactor. Water changes will help immensely as well.

I'd say a decent sized fuge with algae would work if it's mostly coral. I ran skimmer less 60 cube for a long time with fish. But I had a massive amount of algae in a refugium. Had to trim it like every 2 weeks

Yes a strong enough algal export and you will have no nutrient problems, and you'll keep all the yummy particles in the water for the corals to feed.

In my 22 gallon, I have an algae scrubber, 10 gallon refugium, and a bag of chemipure. Macro algae is my friend. It’s a year old and everything is great. Protein skimmers aren’t necessary.
